Brown University’s Bio-Medical Center

At the Bio-Medical Center, Structure Tone staff provided construction management services for the demolition and renovation of 9,000sf. Construction took place while classes were held, experiments conducted and daily activities continued. Four research labs were built and equipped with gas lines, H2O purification systems and vibration-free benches. Renovations and upgrades were made to the mechanical and electrical systems, as well as plumbing to including new piping for lab waste and deionized and domestic H2O. In addition to labs, this space housed general office space, a dark room and two cold rooms.

Coordinating Multiple Shutdowns

This project took place on the third floor, with operating labs located above and below, making coordination of MEP system shutdowns absolutely crucial. This project required four separate shutdowns for the:

  • relocation of the electrical bus duct from one side to the opposite side of the corridor
  • installation of new chilled water piping
  • installation of a new sprinkler riser
  • modifications to the boiler plant

Structure Tone coordinated the scheduled shutdowns through weekly meetings with all the lab users, the engineering staff and the building manager to make sure temporary power connections were put into place for any existing research/lab projects. We also provided advance notifications to all building personnel. Our staff took extreme care to inform the building users of the upcoming construction activities to ensure we did not adversely affect their work.
