Historic Preservation
The Buddhist Culture Center purchased a landmark vacant lot listed in the District of Columbia’s Inventory of Historic Sites, for its new house of worship. Designed to complement the community stone, stucco, copper and wood were used so the building would fit seamlessly into its surroundings. Construction of the 18,500sf building project entailed:
- a mixed-use building with a below-grade parking garage
- a 200-seat main sanctuary and an additional 50-seat sanctuary
- two combination prayer and study spaces
- two rooms for counseling and study
- multi-purpose fellowship lounge and guest reception room
- administrative office space
- a bookstore
- an outdoor plaza, garden and meditation paths
- sustainable, eco-friendly 2,500sf roof-top vegetative garden
- storm water management system
Security
Precise planning and coordination was essential for the successful execution of the project. Special consideration was taken to ensure the safety and protection of the local community, including coordinating deliveries and material entry with the secret service to ensure the security of the residence of the Vice President, the US Naval Observatory Base and several embassies. Restrictions were also placed on Massachusetts Avenue, allowing rear alley deliveries only.
