New Broadcast Studio

Structure Tone provided construction management services for CBS Studio 58, a digital, state-of-the-art broadcast facility that is the home of The Early Show. The studio encompasses 5,000sf, including a 35ft ceiling in the broadcast facility, which is approximately 24,000sf (not including mechanical and roof space). The set for The Early Show was designed to accommodate the primary anchor location; a news set; and interview, multi-purpose, and demonstration areas for appropriate segments. The control room (as well as newsroom, offices, and makeup and dressing rooms) are located one floor below the studio and extend under the building’s outdoor plaza. Also constructed were a full working kitchen and dumbwaiter for the production of cooking segments. Five permanent outdoor internet kiosks on the street allow the public access to CBS.com.

Planning and Executing the Work

Our team worked closely with the National Association of Broadcasters’ Engineers to provide value engineering recommendations and alternatives to reduce the project costs without sacrificing the design intent and quality. Together they were able to design a facility that met CBS’ current needs, but also provided them the ability to grow with the technological advancements of the future. The team coordinated the schedule and construction with building management to synchronize access to building and construction logistics to avoid interrupting building operations and local pedestrian traffic.
