Transforming a Landmark Building
Converting the grand lobby of an early 20th century landmark building built in 1908, into a lively Italian open market and a learning center, required the flexibility and management of a world-class contractor. The 100-year old building presented some unique challenges to the team. As areas were demolished and prepped for construction layers of history from the old building were exposed. The unique features of the era were preserved and incorporated into the design, including:
- marble columns and walls uncovered were restored, refinished and cleaned
- the existing floor, which varied in height more than 16 inches in some areas was leveled in order to incorporate the hand-laid mosaic tiles, create a safe walkway throughout the shop and properly install the equipment
- folding iron gates at the entrance of the building were reused
- original bronze moldings were repurposed to frame a group of interior show windows
