Maple Street Correctional Center

Layton partnered with Sundt Construction to complete the new Maple Street Correctional Center. The project involved remediation of a brownfield site and demolition of existing structures to prepare 4.8 acres for development of a new 832-bed jail complex. The new facility includes inmate housing, support spaces, a natural light-filled visitor lobby, video visitation area, intake, full-service kitchen, laundry facility, locker rooms, staff dining with outside eating area, and loading docks. Security on this project became extremely important as completed parts of the jail were occupied as the team completed the remaining tenant improvements.

The facility also includes a separate 88-bed transitional housing area for work-furlough prisoners. The three-story transitional housing unit has multiple program areas as well as a normalized environment to help inmates adjust and prepare themselves for life outside of jail. This area supports the facility’s goal of preventing inmates from getting into the recidivism cycle, and includes specialized inmate program areas for dog training, gardening, and culinary arts.

The project incorporated several features that emphasize sustainability. The goal was to earn LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, but exceeded state requirements for energy efficiency and attained a LEED Gold certification by recycling 80% of materials. The project boasts significant reductions in a number of metrics, most significantly water use. Through the use of increased efficiency plumbing and recycled water available through Redwood City’s purple pipe system, the facility reduced indoor water use by 54% and cut potable water use for landscaping to zero.
