The Population Council
The Population Council is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization. The Council conducts biomedical, social science and public health research and helps build research capacities in developing countries. Structure Tone managed a 37,500sf interior build-out on the second and third floors of One Dag Hammarskjold Plaza for their New York office.
The scope of work consisted of conference rooms, private offices, open workstations, breakout rooms, file/storage areas, a pantry and an interconnecting stair. The finished space features several high-end finishes including millwork and glass fronts.
The highlight of the space is the intricate interconnecting staircase that leads into the employee lounge and library area. Construction of the stair required extensive coordination with the steel vendor; this coordination allowed the team to meet milestone dates so that the stair was finished by the client’s scheduled move-in date. The finished stair is made of millwork, terrazzo stair threads and an exposed metal railing. At the stair landing there is a glass feature wall.
The project was completed on a fast-track, 16-week schedule. Coordinating with the design team and subcontractors early in the project and managing long-lead items and milestone dates was crucial to the success of the project. Although the schedule was a major factor, it did not affect the quality of the finished project and the client moved in on time.
